Freedom at Amp
If you've spent some time at Amp, you know that we
really dig having a good time. Life is fun, the Web is
fun; we wanna play! But we have to get kind of serious
for a minute, and we need you to stick with us. Think
about this....
1) Every moment you are online, you are contributing to
the very definition of the Web. Right now, reading
this, you are part of the exchange of information that
makes it such a powerful medium of communication.
2) Because of the Web, the line between information
creators and consumers has grown so fine as to be
essentially non-existent. We are you; you are us.
Everything that affects you here can be felt by someone
else and vice versa.
3) Freedom of expression has always been the key to our
growth, as individuals and as a society. Restraints on
that freedom will change the way we grow. Limits on our
language and ideas will become limits on our very
identities. If we are not allowed to discuss certain
subjects, view certain images, or use certain words,
then who are we? We will be defined by others, not by
ourselves.
Where are we going with all this? Glad you asked.
Legislation recently passed by Congress threatens to
criminalize certain kinds of information on the Web.
This threat runs counter to one of our country's
greatest traditions, that of freedom of speech.
Relinquishing control over this freedom can only serve
to cripple the Web, to close us off from one another,
and to degrade our rights.
We have already encountered people who are being
threatened by ambiguous definitions of "indecent"
material on their sites. Financial and legal pressures
are beginning to restrict access to various sites that
need not be restricted. We can see it starting, but
it's much more difficult to see where it will end.
This is now affecting us, which means it is also
affecting you.
At Amp, we need to write challenging articles and
publish important interviews. We need to explore the
Web, to create links, and to learn about the online
world. Why do we want to do this? Because the online
world is a beautiful reflection of the real world.
With access, we are free to choose, free to define
ourselves. Restricted, we become what a few hundred men
and women in Congress say we should be.
There are many, many ways to defend your right to
freedom of speech on the Web. Check out sites for 24
Hours of Democracy, EFF's Blue Ribbon Campaign, and our
own Utility Belt of Freedom. Then use these resources
to act. Contact your representatives, stay informed
about the issues, get active in your community.
It's time to stand up for what we believe in, kids.
Go get 'em. -Amp editor Colin Lingle
